Here are our achievements to date:

  • A successful protest (on November 8th) which saw the price of fuel drop 8 cents per litre
  • A petition to all Merritt Gas Companies to lower prices
  • Filed Complaint Forms for each of the gas stations with the Competition Bureau, which has also been submitted by our MP, Dan Albas
  • Have acted as an advocate at all political levels: municipal, provincial and federal
  • Creation of Merrittonians Against Gas Price Fixing!, a Facebook group to keep residents informed about our movement

Who we are

We are a group of Merritt residents who support local business to the fullest. We will not, however, continue to be gouged by fixed gas prices. These prices have remained the same for over a year. Prices that have been 20 cents a litre higher than Kamloops. We believe Merritt IS a competitive market for fuel (despite what gas companies keep telling us) and that gas stations take advantage of highway motorists who think they need to fill up before heading over the coquihalla, as well as residents of Merritt, especially those on low fixed incomes and seniors.

When residents fill their tanks in Kamloops, they are also likely spending money on groceries, household goods, clothing, services and entertainment. We believe that with a competitive gas price, residents would stay in Merritt and do most of their shopping in town. A competitive gas price would bring traffic off the highway, into our city to spend money.

We have taken action. We will not stop until Merritt has a competitive gas price.
